Beautiful and Serene Sixteen Mile Creek Trail Loop

Sixteen Mile creek is named for the distance from the river’s mouth to the western end of Lake Ontario. It was previously known to the Mississauga Indians in their language as Ne-sauga y-onk or niizhozaagiwan (“having two outlets”) and to the French as Rivière de Gravois (“gravelly river”).

This trail is one of my favourite local trails. It’s beautiful and serene. Because a lot of the trail is higher up on the creek’s banks, the path is mostly dry. As well, there are lots o lookouts along the trail.

Halfway into the trail, I saw this circle of stones. None of the 16 Mile Creek Trail websites mention these stones, so I’m not sure why they are there, except perhaps to sit and teach, given this trail’s link to Indigenous culture.

“Sixteen Mile Creek has cut a deep valley that is home to a broad range of wildlife, including whitetail deer, raccoons, foxes, opossums, and squirrels.” ( Source ) I’ve also seen fish in the stream.

Along the trail, you will find some stories about the land and its people and notices of invasive species on plaques.

Overall, this trail is lovely. You can expect some hills and valleys, bridges and water, as well as some lookout areas, and in some places, you are close to residential homes. I’m a big fan of the variety here. I recommend putting aside a good 1.5 hrs to complete this trail.
