This article is a part of the Going-Places Newsletter August 10, 2023.
Richard Rankin is the special guest who will appear at this festival. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland and is known as Roger Wakefield MacKenzie in the drama Outlander.
The 3-day Fergus Scottish Festival will celebrate local Scottish heritage. The Pipes Plaid and Pageantry Parade kicks off on Thursday in downtown Fergus.
Then, starting on Friday at 10am, downtown Fergus will be alive with displays and shows. followed by a jam-packed multi-venue event list on Friday evening, as well as all day on Saturday and Sunday. Some of the events include:
- World Renowned Talent and entertainment
- Heavy Events Competitions
- Pipe Band Competitions,
- Highland Dancers and so much more!
Heavy Events Competitions
Now let’s discuss the Heavy Events Competitions. Did you know that the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games will host this year’s 2023 World Heavy Events Championship? Check out their website – this competition is happening on Friday Evening and is bound to be exciting.
I noticed the rest of the Heavy Weight Competitions start on the Main Field on Friday evening, then continues on Saturday and Sunday.
But, I must admit, I didn’t understand what it all meant when I first wrote about this festival last year. If that is you as well, then I offer this Youtube video for an idea of the heavy events in a Scottish Highland Games. It’s all very impressive. Love how the video ends with the muscle flexing! lol!
If Highland Dancing is more your style, check out the full day of competitions on Saturday and Sunday. Dance competitions include Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Reel, and more.
There are way more events and interesting highlights all in separate tents at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games such as:
- Sheep shearing and Gaelic lessons in the Performance Tent,
- Pipe Bands in the Highland Pub,
- Clan Tents,
- a Whisky Tent, and so on.
Needless to say, I believe this event is the top event to go to that weekend. It literally has EVERYTHING Scottish for everyone!
Important note: No dogs are allowed at this Festival so your furry friends have to stay home this time.
